Details after the jump
a guilty verdict just came down for Jason Van Dyke, a Chicago Police Officer charged with murder in the 2014 shooting of Laquan McDonald. Hes the first Chicago cop since the 40s to be charged with murder. and I think justice has been served and hopefully with the guilty verdict chicago wont erupt into violence as was predicted had he been found not guilty.

Flight of the Navigator (1986)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091059/
One of my all-time favourites when I was growing up. It’s not a great movie, but it’s fun nonetheless.

It’s a good decision, though I can’t help thinking that the bunch of other cops who lied on their reports to try to cover for this guy should be joining him in jail for a bit.
Also good on the people who worked to get the video released, and to the judge who permitted it, without their actions this murderer would likely still be wearing a badge today.

Can you imagine Harlem and Hells Kitchen with internet driven social media and bloggers back during the truly horrid years? There is little positive to rest upon in Chicago right now.

Ah. Heard of it, never saw it.

I was really happy to see the verdicts. I do wonder, however, how he can be convicted of everything except official misconduct? Maybe someone here who knows more than I can enlighten me/us?

yeah i was confused on that as well but i dont think that verdict matters much since hes going away for a minimum of 96 years just on the aggravated battery with a firearm charges by themselves

The arguments of each shot being it’s own incident of aggravated battery is fantastic. I love that they did that. I know it doesn’t matter at all, I just find it confusing. Like, don’t worry asshole, you were found guilty on 17 different counts, and you’ll likely die in prison, but at least it wasn’t misconduct...
!?

so from what my cousin says who is a lawyer in downtown, it could have been because in van dykes mind he had some justification of the shooting, but since he was found guilty of second degree murder and all the aggravated battery there was no need to have a fall back charge in the misconduct. but even he says thats only an educated guess

That’s basically what I/we figured.

i also heard it could also have something to do with his family being able to still collect what hes paid into his pension but if thats the case thats bullshit

Well that’s fucking bullshit if so.

Also, that scene above is my favorite.

Do you think His family should have to suffer losing the pension money too? At least he’s going away, but it’s not like his family had anything to do with the murder. He won’t see it.

thas not true, his family could easy send him that pension money, once its in their bank account they can do whatever they want with it, including sending it to Van Dyke while hes in prison. so yes i do believe that when youre a convicted felon you and your family should lose out on your pension.
